HERSTON IMAGING RESEARCH FACILITY

About Us

HIRF End FrameEstablished in 2015, the $24M Herston Imaging Research Facility (HIRF) is one of only a handful of imaging research facilities in Australia embedded in a clinical precinct.

The facility was made possible through a powerful industry and healthcare collaboration offering clinicians and researchers unprecedented access to groundbreaking imaging technology for the rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice.

HIRF has been purpose-built to facilitate clinical trials and its state-of-the art clinical scanners and prime location within Australia's largest hospital precinct position it as a leading global force in clinical imaging research.

The facility was formed through an alliance between four leading university and healthcare institutions: The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute; and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (through the Metro North Hospital and Health Service). Siemens Australia is the industry partner, supplying the state-of-the-art clinical scanners set to revolutionise patient care.

HIRF provides a unique opportunity for clinicians and researchers to work collaboratively to identify new diagnosis and treatment pathways for conditions such as dementia and ageing, mental illness, brain development and cancer.

Positioned for Success

HIRF is located at the heart of one our nation’s largest research and clinical precincts in close proximity to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and partner research facilities such as The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, and the Queensland University of Technology.

The RBWH is one of Australia’s largest quaternary and tertiary referral teaching hospitals with capacity for more than 900 beds and access to large patient cohorts for clinical trials in dementia, oncology and other conditions. In addition, the hospital houses a large, Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certified, radiochemistry facility producing the latest PET radio tracers which form the basis of imaging systems used at HIRF such as PET scans.

HIRF is also closely aligned to specialised contract research organisations that have extensive experience in supporting early phase clinical trials. Notable local organisations include Q-Pharm Pty Limited, which undertakes a broad range of early phase clinical trials for clients in the global pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries; and TetraQ, which provides GLP bioanalytical services to support preclinical studies as well as early phase clinical trials and bioequivalence studies in humans.

With such expertise at its fingertips, HIRF is a major platform for clinical imaging research in Australia.

Geared for Leading Clinical Trials with Global Impact

Medical Imaging has become an essential element in the drug discovery pipeline. HIRF offers new opportunities for national and international biotechnology companies to conduct leading clinical trials using the latest medical imaging technology within Australia's largest hospital precinct.
