Alan Coulthard is Professor of Neuroradiology at the University of Queensland and a full time diagnostic and interventional neuroradiologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH). His research interests include brain neoplasms, neurodegenerative diseases, multiple sclerosis and neurovascular disease. As a clinical and academic radiologist he brings a pragmatic clinical focus to research questions, and has a long history of collaboration with many of the research leaders associated with HIRF. He is Director of Research for the Department of Medical Imaging (DMI) and is the liaison radiologist between DMI and HIRF, with oversight of the reading of HIRF MRI studies to screen for detection of abnormalities, support of the HIRF MRI radiographers and assistance in developing imaging protocols for new studies. One of his goals is to enthuse the next generation of radiologists in clinical research, and to this end he has been instrumental in the introduction of research into the radiology training curriculum, introduced an innovative pre radiology research position within DMI as well as supervising several PhD and MPhil candidates in imaging related research projects. Alan is immediate Past President of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Neuroradiology (ANZSNR) and Chairman of the Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Interventional Neuroradiology.
